N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is a potent antioxidant derived from naturally occurring amino acids. While NAC is commonly used by doctors to treat people who have overdone acetaminophen (paracetamol, Tylenol), supplementation with NAC and/or its precursor glutathione may have other health benefits. A specific area of interest for researchers is the effect of NAC on the immune system.
When NAC is ingested, the body converts the more stable NAC into the less stable glutathione, which contains three amino acids: glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid. Glutathione is naturally present in humans, animals, plants and fungi and helps protect cells from oxidative damage. In addition, glutathione helps the body "recycle" vitamins E and C.
