dl-alpha tocopherol acetate, also known as vitamin E acetate, is a common vitamin supplement. vitamin e oil tocopherol is an ester of acetic acid and tocopherol (vitamin E) and vitamin e oil tocopherol is commonly used in skin care products such as skin creams. dl-alpha tocopherol acetate is not oxidized and can penetrate the skin into living cells, where approximately 5% is converted to free tocopherol, providing beneficial antioxidant effects. Since the phenolic hydroxyl groups are blocked, dl-alpha tocopherol acetate is used as a substitute for tocopherol itself, providing a less acidic product with a longer shelf life. dl-alpha tocopherol acetate thought that once absorbed into the skin, acetate is slowly hydrolyzed to regenerate tocopherols, providing sun protection.
